Kentucky Derby Horse Deaths Raise Concerns

Seven Horses Die in 10-Day Span Leading Up to Race

Two More Die on Derby Day

A total of nine horses have now died at Churchill Downs in the lead-up to and during the Kentucky Derby, prompting an investigation into the fatalities.

The first horse, a 2-year-old colt named Gun Runner, died on April 29 from a pulmonary hemorrhage. In the following days, six more horses died from various causes, including heart failure, colic, and a broken leg.

On Derby Day, two more horses died. Eight Belles, a 3-year-old filly who finished second in the race, collapsed and died after suffering a broken ankle. Mine That Bird, the winner of the race, also died after suffering a heart attack.

Churchill Downs officials have suspended training at the track while they investigate the deaths. They have also hired an independent veterinary panel to review the circumstances surrounding each horse's death.

The deaths have raised concerns about the safety of horse racing and the conditions at Churchill Downs. Some animal rights activists have called for an end to the sport, while others have said that more needs to be done to protect the horses.
